Project cost is scaled based on the risk percentage. |
This assumes an average server for 30-300 users is already in place and requires replacement
Initially, an external consultant will take a lot of your time as your bring them up to speed on what needs to be done and how. After that, the consultant will need much less of your time for reporting and resolving issues.
When planning their own internal projects, people often under plan, spending too little or no time on analysing risks, schedule and budget constraints. This results in project cost and schedule overrun in most projects and more of your time being used overall.
Initially, as you are developing your project plan , schedules, risks and budgets, you will need to make a concerted effort. However using ProManIS, the step by step approach and walk through descriptions of what needs to be done will keep this time to a minimum, similar to the time needed to explain things to a consultant and check their work.
For simplicity, risk as equally attributed to cost and schedule. Other risks may include system performance, mean down time, expandability, training needs etc.
It is hoped that with a expert project management consultant there is little risk of cost or schedule overruns.
With little rigorous project planning a project is very likely to overrun. 60% of large IS projects overrun by more than 50% and 20% are never completed.
While ProManIS provides a rigorous planning approach, it is not expected that you will be able to eliminate risk. 30% is based on feedback from first time ProManIS users. The experierence gain will mean that subsequent projects may reduce risks considerably further.
Staff may work on this part-time, depending on available resources. The project duration takes into account schedule overruns directly related to the rigor of planning and the confidence/risk associated with the plan.
Assumed consultant fee is a conservative $100/hr. Note that cost for an externally managed project can rapidly escalate in the closure phase of a project. 85% of all 3 month project management contracts with consultants are extended.
